Choose Recovery Meditation
When we finally accepted that we were powerless over alcohol and drugs, we saw that we not only could choose recovery over our addiction, but that we could be happy too. When we are using or drinking we found it impossible to stop, and when we stopped, we found it almost impossible to stay stopped without a solution. Some of us were told when we came into the rooms that we never had to feel that way again if we made a decision to choose recovery.
Many of us found that we kept relapsing once we came into the rooms because of this acceptance, later we found more reasons. Sometimes we were attending meetings, engaging in fellowship, building relationships, reading literature, and yet we were still relapsing. The ultimate problem we began to see was that we were not accepting that we were A. powerless over drugs/alcohol B. willing to really do the work towards recovery and C. changing our behaviors. We wanted what we wanted and we wanted recovery our way.
Half measures availed us nothing; we had to thoroughly seek this way of life if we were to choose recovery. Recovery was not just an hour out of the day; it had to be a way of life. Recovery was not just a social gathering, and the rooms are not a fashion show, or a dating service, they are there to help save the lives of sick and suffering addict/alcoholic. When we began to make recovery a way of life and practiced these principles in all our affairs we saw that we were not only staying clean and sober, but we were genuinely happy. We wanted to give back and thought less of what we could get from others, we started to love our fellows rather than cause them harm. We became honest productive members of society and we not only looked healthy on the outside, we felt it.
After we were able to accept with honesty that we were powerless over alcohol and drugs, we started to change because we were willing to go to any length to recover. If you find that you are more concerned with how you look, what guy/girl you are seeing, hanging out with friends, gossiping, judging, and working the program your way, you may want to rethink your program of recovery. If you are unsure, ask those who are living this way of life and not just talking about it. We can change and choose recovery at any point of our lives if we are willing to do so.
