Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm & Have Faith
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Most of us started to lose faith the longer we stayed in our addiction. We lost faith in people, places, and things – we lost faith in ourselves most of all. We saw that these things could not get us clean and sober, and if they did, they could not keep it that way. The same was true for our own willpower. Nothing was working, but others told us there was something that would, but we had to have faith.
What we didn’t know is that not all our faith had been gone. We had faith in the little things. We knew that the sun would rise and set, the earth would rotate, and stars would shine – we had it when it pertained to these things. We believed in it because it was proven to be, we may not always see it, but we knew it existed. Why couldn’t we take that same belief in our recovery? Was not faith just a belief after all?
Some people say that you cannot use a doorknob as your Higher Power, that you need to believe in something greater that will not fail you. I later heard someone share that having faith in a doorknob is just enough to make a beginning, as long as that doorknob leads you to the rooms. In taking this step you found you already believed that we are all here on the other side, and we were.
Although faith may have failed when we were in our addiction, we had some sort of faith when we came into recovery, it was hope. We saw that others were once as lost as we, and that they were able to recover with just a little bit of hope. We saw that hope turn into faith and we saw it grow as time went on and more work was done in the program. If I am lacking in my faith today, it is because I am trying to control and run the show. When I have faith, I have trust in the process and life seems to run smoothly. If at any point you feel you are losing or lost your faith, believe that we believe, and know that we are always on the other side of that doorknob.
