SOS Children’s Village: The Watershed Supports Community Outreach
On December 16, 2012, the Watershed will be partnering with SOS Children’s Village in Coconut Creek, Florida, for their annual holiday fundraiser. The SOS Children’s Village is an entire neighborhood in Coconut Creek devoted to providing foster children a safe and healthy environment to live in. The Village can accommodate up to 75 boys and girls looking for a stable childhood, escaping from unhealthy and dangerous dysfunctional family lives. It is a privilege for us to be able to volunteer time and energy to the worthy cause of making positive investments in children’s lives. These kids are often the victims of families that have lost the ability to responsibly care for children because of alcoholism, addiction and domestic violence. Sometimes the parents are even incarcerated for drug trafficking and distributing; sometimes these families are able to be reconciled and those stories of hope and new lives in recovery are inspirational.
Even with uncertain and tumultuous family lives, the boys and girls of the SOS Children’s Village are given the unique opportunities to maintain ties with their biological families by reuniting siblings from broken homes. The Village also provides an After Care program which helps former kids that are now 18 years and older transition to adult life following foster care. Funded primarily by government aid and charitable contributions, the Village has helped hundreds of boys and girls find stability and obtain values to live a happy and healthy life, which may not have been possible in their prior circumstances. It is a joy for us here at the Watershed to help gather donations in order to ensure places like the SOS Children’s Village has the means to provide their children with a fun and happy holiday season.
Sunday, December 16, volunteers from the Watershed will be bringing gifts and spending time with the kids at the Village. The day will be filled with face painting, a football game, bounce houses, arts and crafts, a visit from Santa Claus, presents and a big holiday dinner. Since a lot of these kids come from homes mired in substance abuse, alcoholism, and drug addiction, this is a great opportunity to serve them and to pour into their lives with love and hope; hope for them to live a drug-free and happy life. Reaching out with food and fun is a great way to have a great time, but just visably communicating to these kids that there are people out there that can help, no matter how bad the situation may seem to be, is what is truly important in these children’s lives. We want to expend ourselves in the pursuit of freeing people from the bondage of addiction and alcoholism, as well as provide help, direction and counsel to those, like children, who are directly affected.
