Fiona Apple: Criminal Drug Use
For those alternative rock aficionados that enjoyed the musical nirvana that pervaded airways in the mid 1990’s, you would probably remember the name Fiona Apple. With the stereotypically deep-set and brooding eyes, Apple embodied the tortured, angst-ridden post-adolescence musician of the flannel era. If it was a foregone conclusion that Apple aligned herself within the drug culture then, fast-forwarding almost 20 years to the present, we have valid press releases that communicate otherwise. In tele-type speak: Fiona Apple arrested last week for possession of hash.
Fiona Apple: Criminal?
Hash, or hashish, is the B-side to the #1 hit, cannabis sativa (this explication of weed, pot, and marijuana is technically and politically incorrect, but for all the non-science genus/species/phylum people, hashish is simply compressed resin from the cannabis plant) Anyway, whatever it technically is, Apple was busted for having it on her tour bus as she traveled between shows way down in west Texas, near the Mexico border. Apple was charged and her picture taken that closely resembles Willie Nelson’s mug shot when he was arrested in the same town two years ago.
First, hashish, like marijuana, has the potential for abuse, leading to addiction. Asking yourself “Am I Addicted” questions even if you or someone you knows “only” smokes a little weed or hash may be helpful. Fiona would have probably benefitted from this then she may have avoided the punitive repercussions of her actions. Once she made bail, she preformed at a show in Houston, and disgorged a patented Fiona Apple rant concerning her arrest and the questionable treatment she received, implying it was perhaps unethical or even illegal.
The sheriff’s office ended up responding by asking Apple to file an ethical grievance, as well as a dig from Sierra Blanca Public Informations Officer Fleming saying “First- Honey, I’m already more famous than you, I don’t need your help. However, it would appear that you need mine… Have you ever heard of Snoop [Lion], Willie [Nelson] or Armand Hammer? Maybe if you would read something besides your own press releases, you would have known BEFORE you got here, that if you come to Texas with dope, the cops will take your DOPE away and put YOU in jail… “Even though you and I only met briefly in the hallway, I don’t know you but I’m sure you’re an awesome and talented young woman,” he wrote. “I’m sure that [your fans] would just as soon you get this all behind you and let you go back to what you do best — so my last piece of advice is simple ‘just shut-up and sing.’ Sincerely, Rusty Fleming.”
Apple is actually preforming in South Florida (Miami) this weekend if you would like a lesson in rhetoric. More importantly, if you need information concerning the insanity of addiction and alcoholism, call 1-800-853-1614 and take the first step towards reality in recovery!
