Warning: This Drug May Kill You Trailer
The film ‘Warning: This Drug May Kill You’ aired on HBO at 10:00 PM on Tuesday, May 1st, 2017, and it’s not just talking about the opioid epidemic, but how we are treating it, and those who are suffering from it.
A Sobering “Warning”
First on Today talked about the following three key points, and why a documentary like ‘Warning: This Drug May Kill’ is important.
Understanding Opioids Better
We need to better educate ourselves and others about prescription painkillers like opioids. The more information we know about these narcotics. Also, their short-term and long-term effects will help to prevent an addiction from developing.
Even if you think a prescription drug does not have a narcotic in it, be sure you ask and research the medication(s) yourself.
If you need to take a painkiller, be sure to have a conversation with your doctor about your concerns regarding addiction. Ask what non-narcotic drugs could be a better solution. This is an important and open conversation you need to have with your doctor to make sure you or your loved one is safe.
Fewer Prescriptions Written
A doctor’s job is to help diagnose and treat, but proper patient care is more than just writing a script and sending a patient on their way. Once again, an open conversation needs to happen between doctor and patient to ensure their health needs are met without placing their life in danger.
In many cases, there are alternative medicines or less/non addictive medicines that could help the patient with relieving pain or symptoms. Not every condition needs to be met with an opioid. So doctors need to really make sure that the patient absolutely needs what they are prescribing.
Change In Attitude Towards Addiction
There is such a strong stigma associated with addiction that many still believe it’s something people choose, rather than a disease. Many people are becoming addicted without even knowing they are heading down that path. A prescription given by a doctor may seem harmless enough until the disease of addiction takes over.
The brain does not know the difference between a medical and recreational drug. And after even short term use, the body and mind can become addicted. It is not a choice, and we need to stop condemning those who are addicted and start treating them.
Recovery Is Real
Time will tell if the new HBO documentary ‘Warning: This Drug May Kill’ will gain viral attraction. And result in helping our nation better understand the opioid epidemic and the disease of addiction.
Recovery is possible, but we need to help smash the stigma associated with addiction. Help raise awareness, and show others that recovery is possible. And there is treatment available for those suffering. You or your loved one do not have to do this alone and The Watershed can help.
