“Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.” —Rikki Rogers
Nothing in this world worth having is easy to get. It may be simple; it may be somewhat challenging, but rarely is it easy. I know that some of you may already want to argue that point, and you can, but if you think about it, how easy was it for you to get one of the greatest gifts of all – sobriety? For me it was a lot of hard work that just made these past several years a-maz-ing to say the least!
I don’t think my journey in recovery would have been as wonderful had I not faced the many obstacles that were ahead of me. It afforded me the opportunity to truly see how sobriety worked and that I could stay sober through even the scariest of times. I also found myself living in gratitude after overcoming these “obstacles” and thinking how bright the world was once I got out of the darkness.
I believe that I have been able to appreciate my life much more because I know how bad it once was. Some of the happiest people I know have been through some of these most terrible life situations. It gives me hope to know that there are other people out there, too, that will not allow their past to dictate their present or future. This gives great relief to anyone who is stuck in the darkness looking for a way out.
You get strong by building muscle through exercise and healthy pain. The same goes with getting emotionally strong. Sometimes we have to go through life’s trials and tribulations and overcome those pesky obstacles in order for us to grow and get stronger. Although, this may seem scary, it’s something that we all go through. So, if you are struggling today, know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you just have to keep on working towards overcoming whatever obstacle is blocking you from happiness. Just remember, if we can, you can, too. You are not alone!
