“We will love you so that you can love others.” – Recovery Slogan
I have heard the saying “we love you until you love yourself” many times in the rooms of recovery, but I never heard “We will love you so that you can love others.” When I first heard that, it just hit my heart. I never thought about loving others. I knew how to lust after men, or say the words I love you to friends, family members, and lovers, but I don’t think I actually knew what the meaning of love was. I would later discover it had a lot to with my actions.
Love is action
No matter what anyone tells you, love is action. How you love is a big indicator on how you feel about yourself and the person you state that you love. Are you being kind, loving, tolerant, patient, or understanding towards them? At the same time, are they doing those things for you? I have also been in relationships with others where my actions were very much created out of love, but they weren’t returning the favor. I would then become desperate for their attention and would try to love harder. This almost never works. Love is a two way street and if your intentions for love are to get something out of it, it might not be real love after all.
Love for the sake of love
I found that when I love for just the sake of loving someone, I almost never feel hurt or rejected. I don’t feel this way because my motives are pure. I just want to share my love with others because it makes me feel good. I try to be honest and share my true feelings not because of the approval or attention, but because I like the way it makes me feel. It’s really that simple when it comes to being happy for me. I just am who I am and if I live in fear, it doesn’t usually feel good, so I would rather take the risk of sharing my love.
As with any dilemma in life, meditation is usually an excellent source in getting the answers we are seeking. If you are unsure about your love for yourself or others, meditate about it and talk to someone who has been there and done that. You may be amazed at how powerful the love you have inside you really is. Don’t be scared to share it with yourself and others – the world could use it.
