On Saturday, January 31, Bobbi Kristina Brown was found unconscious in her Georgia home. The 21-year-old daughter of Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston was discovered face down in a bathtub by boyfriend Nick Gordon and friend Max Lomas. Though Bobbi Kristina referred to Nick as her husband, her father’s lawyer has publicly insisted that the couple never officially married.
Details continue to emerge, but as the news broke in early February, drugs were widely speculated to have played a role in Bobbi Kristina’s near-drowning. On February 6, the story took another turn when TMZ reported that Nick Gordon is now under criminal investigation.
The sad story is still developing, but as of February 9, Bobbi Kristina remains in a medically induced coma at an Atlanta hospital.
A family tragedy
The preliminary circumstances of Bobbi Kristina’s near-drowning are eerily familiar to her family. In February 2012, her mother,Whitney Houston, was pronounced dead at a Beverly Hills hotel after being found unconscious in a tub.
Though Houston’s death was ruled an accidental drowning, the autopsy revealed it was due to complications of atherosclerotic heart disease combined with cocaine use. Evidence during the autopsy indicated chronic use. Worse yet,a toxicology report showed additional drugs in her system, including a muscle relaxant, marijuana, Xanax and Benadryl.
As news of the iconic singer’s death spread, there was anoutpouring of sadness from fans and Hollywood alike. The tragedy hit Bobbi Kristina particularly hard. She was admitted to the hospital shortly after her mother’s death following bouts of severe anxiety.
Two years later
The last few years have not been full of particularly good press for the young Bobbi Kristina. The tabloids have painted a story that shows a history of drug and alcohol abuse steeped in family problems.
In 2011,a photograph was published in The National Enquirer showing her leaning over a white powder, supposedly using cocaine. The article spoke of family fights, one of which included Bobbi Kristina allegedly trying to stab her mother, as well as rumors that her parents were considering sending her to rehab – a decision that never seemed to materialize.
In June 2013,Brown and Nick Gordon were evicted from their apartment after months of noise complaints from reported late-night/early-morning partying, even on weeknights.
The next summer, a photograph appeared on Instagram reportedly showing Bobbi Kristinasmoking out of a bong. Although the photograph was posted from her account, she denied that she was the one who posted it and claimed the entire incident was falsified. She defended herself on Twitter saying, “I’ve never posted any photo of me doing anything ! This is someone trying to tarnish and make a horrible name for MYSELf. People are insane.”
Despite her defensive claims, the string of incidents seemed to indicate a pattern similar to that of substance abuse, leading to speculation that drugs could have been involved in this February’s discovery.
People magazine reports that there has been “no change” in Bobbi Kristina’s condition. Her family has stayed with her at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where she remains on life support.
Update, February 10, 2015
According to reports published this morning by both TMZ and The New York Post: Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family has decided to pull her off life support. Sources say that it was Brown’s grandmother, Cissy Houston, who suggested that they wait until Wednesday, February 11, to coincide with the three-year anniversary of the passing of Bobbi Kristina’s mother, Whitney Houston.
However, a lawyer for Bobbi Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, has denied the plans. In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the lawyer called the reports “egregious” and “false,” and added that they “will be dealt with at an appropriate time.”
Update, April 21, 2015
Bobbi Kristina Brown is off life support, but has been diagnosed with global and irreversible brain damage as per her grandmother and reports from CNN. This new report was given just days after Bobbi’s father, Bobby Brown, claimed his daughters condition appeared to be improving. “I can say today, Bobbi is awake. She’s watching me,” Brown told the audience at Dallas’ Verizon Theatre.
The Brown’s family attorney, Christopher Brown, made a public statement that Bobbi Kristina Brown’s condition has improved, but it was uncertain the kind of life she would be able to live. “Doctors have indicated that she will have a long life,” attorney Christopher Brown stated. “However, Bobbi Kristina is presently embarking on a rehabilitation process, and the quality of her life will not be known for years to come.”
At this point Bobbi has been moved to a rehabilitation center and the police are still treating this case as a criminal investigation.
