“What day is it?”
It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. My favorite day,” said Pooh.”

Just For Today
Dealing with life in early recovery can feel overwhelming and scary. For once we are able to actually think, reflect, feel, and deal with life without taking anything to hide the pain. It can be easy to forget to stay in the moment when we allow ourselves to get caught up in crazy thinking. The repetitive thoughts of what we did yesterday, how it’s affected us today, and what the heck is going to happen tomorrow can seem to cripple even the strongest of people.
I Am OK!
The good news is that feelings aren’t facts and that this too shall pass. It just will take time to adjust to this new lifestyle, but you won’t know if you don’t fully give recovery a try. Sometimes you just have to say “my feet are on the ground and just for today, I am Okay” and leave it at that. You don’t have to be an addict or alcoholic to be scared of life either, people who are not in recovery have to deal with pain, too. The only difference is that our pain can either make us grow (spiritually in our program) or go (relapse back to drugs and/or alcohol). Once we put down drugs and alcohol, the choice is ours. I consider ourselves lucky because we have a place to go to help us live life and get through the tough times.
Recovery Is A Process
Whether you have 5 days or 5 years, recovery is a process. We are all just trying to find our own place and happiness in this life, whatever that may look like. For those of us who have been through hell in sobriety and stayed sober, we hope our experience will help you, so you too, can help others. Just don’t give up, just for today. Most of us spent our entire lives just giving up because it was too difficult. We gave up on education, careers, people, places, and even ourselves. At a certain point, giving up is just not an option anymore. That very same determination and motivation to get drunk/high can be the very ingredient you need in order to actually work a program of recovery and be happy.
Just for today, don’t be dramatic, stay in the moment, and get into action! You can be happy if you make the decision to do so. You can and you will. Have faith in the process and stop trying to control everything and everyone around you. Let go of the worry, fear, and anger because at the end of the day, you only have today.
