“Freedom lies in being bold.” – Robert Frost
There is freedom in taking bold steps. Did you know that? I use to think that being bold meant I had to be loud, obnoxious, and maybe even a little outrageous. I never thought of freedom as a result of being bold. Usually when I was bold, I was getting myself into trouble. You see I’m impulsive and compulsive by nature, most addicts/alcoholics are, and I live by self-propulsion, so being bold was nothing new. What was new was how I could take that same energy at being bold and turn it into something positive, like my sobriety.
When I first came into recovery I threw myself into my program. I treated my program of recovery like my life depended on, because it did. I had a bold drive like no other. I didn’t care what you thought about me, I was not giving up. When others were acting out by stealing, cheating, lying, sleeping around, and relapsing, I worked that much harder. I knew that this was my last chance at getting sober, and this was my last chance at being truly happy and free. As a direct result of being bold and putting every ounce of energy into my recovery, I not only got sober, I stayed sober and was filled with real peace and joy. It was so simple. The more effort and trust I put into my recovery, the more relief from my alcoholism/addiction I received.
If you are unhappy, fearful, anxious, or just stuck, it might just be time for you to take a bold step towards changing that. We are in charge of our own happiness and it is up to us to go after our dreams and goals. No more blaming others or acting out in self-pity, it’s time for change. Make today the day that you dust yourself off and get bold. Your happiness is in your hands and you can achieve it today, just depends on how much willingness you have to put in the effort to do so. Be bold; be daring, be happy.
