Michael Botticelli was just nominated to permanently keep the position he has been maintaining at the White House as Director of National Drug Control Policy; he has held the position of acting Director since mid March. The 56-year-old politician was all smiles in photos when the news hit the press. He was quick to credit others as he commented, “I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity to lead the national effort to reduce the drug use and its consequences and I know that I would not have gotten to this point without the hard work and support of my colleagues across the administration, every member of the office and my family, particularly my husband, Dave.” A little back-story of the man’s struggle and triumph also found its way to the surface: the new Drug Czar is also a recovering alcoholic with over 25 years of sobriety!
New Drug Czar: Recovering Alcoholic
Because of his previous credentials as director of the Massachusetts bureau of Substance Abuse Services, and his involvement in the political field in general, the average person may find it hard to believe that Michael Botticelli himself battled the disease of alcoholism. The dedicated man was reported as having been motivated to get sober after a car accident that was a result of drunk driving. The peril of the incident was severe enough that consequences left him in handcuffs in the hospital and in financial turmoil. In 1988, Botticelli immersed himself into a 12 Step Program and has maintained sobriety as a result. Very empathetic towards those suffering from alcoholism and other addictions alike, Botticelli commented that recovery is possible. Using himself as an example, he says, “I’m one of 23 million Americans in recovery who have gone on to live productive lives.”
Impact of Michael Botticelli As Drug Czar
The fact that our new Drug Czar has a history of understanding the disease behind alcoholism and addiction can actually prove beneficial, especially considering that the nation is in the heat of a serious heroin epidemic, and drugs claim the lives of countless individuals on a daily basis. With an official that is in full awareness of the truth of the disease model behind alcoholism and addiction, there is more hope that the false stigma that the illness is a choice can be banished. He has already made efforts to aid addicts in the process of employment and shelter. His goals have included preventing and reducing the amount of overdoses in the country. People are also more likely to believe his ideals because of his compassion stemming from his personal experience with his own alcoholism. This will be the most suitable personality and preference in order to combat the horror of the current war on drugs, seeing as the new Drug Czar views the state of the nation as a health crisis versus a legal woe.
Michael Botticelli being nominated as the White House Office Director of National Drug Control Policy is a pivotal movement that will dramatically shift the nation in a better direction when it comes to drugs. Having a recovering alcoholic with a substantial amount of sobriety could prove to be an important factor that ultimately saves lives of the citizens of the country from destruction of addiction.
2/9/2015: The US Senate confirmed Botticelli’s nomination by President Obama for the Drug Czar position. The previous week The White House declared that a new system of government funding would be authorized for drug treatment, including for medication assisted therapies.
