For most binge drinkers, the calories in alcohol may either be entirely unknown to exist or just flat out ignored. Considering multiple drinks add up to an extensively large amount of calories from alcohol, the intake of additional calories from normal food intake increases the likelihood of overeating; a negative but very real consideration when a person partakes in binge drinking. Researchers have officially connected excessive food consumption after alcohol intake, and determined that weight gain can, in fact, be a result of the two totaling far past the necessary amount of daily calories needed for a person to maintain their body weight and survive. In other words, these people were consuming sometimes more than twice a day’s necessary caloric intake for survival, ultimately absorbing calories for reasons that were inappropriate and not related to nourishing purposes.
Calories in Alcohol Add Up
It was reported in a study that binge drinking can add an extra caloric intake of over 6,000 calories in a single day. With this outrageously high proportion of unnecessary calories, a person could put on an average of two pounds of weight per day. With all these extra calories in alcohol, binge drinking can result in excessive weight gain and ultimately, obesity. However, it is not the alcohol alone that puts on all the weight. In the same study, 51% of drinkers claimed they felt compelled to indulge in large amounts of fast food during their drinking binge. So in addition to the large amount of calories in alcohol, these people were eating far more than their bodies needed for a day’s nourishment. Doctors have even stated that alcohol in a person’s system can make the drinker experience more satisfied tastes with food. Many would assume that the person’s weight would return to normal after their indulgence, as long they abstained from continuous alcohol intake and maintained their regular food plan. The only flaw with this, is that the person may be sick with a hangover from the night of binge drinking and overeating. This can make the person want to remain at bed rest, watch television, or who knows, maybe continue eating or drinking alcohol to subdue their hangover symptoms. All of these result in extremely little or absolutely no physical activity and also can contribute to weight gain.

Complications from Over-consumption of Calories
Campaigners are concerned that drinkers are not aware of the calories in alcohol and are fighting for the calories to be stated on the drinks. Some people may think, “What’s the big deal for one night of excessive drinking and eating?” or “Who cares if extra calories are consumed?” The truth of the matter is that consuming such a large amount of calories that provokes rapid weight gain can prove to pose serious health risks. The large consumption of calories has potential to affect your heart, cause certain cancers, and begin the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Aside from these physical health problems, overeating can develop into a type of eating disorder with a plethora of detrimental health concerns.
