“Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

Rock Bottom On Meditation
Most of us had to hit a rock bottom before we were able to live a life free from drugs and alcohol. We may have actually hit a few bottoms, each one progressively worse than the first. We may have kicked and screamed asking, “why me!?” but would continue on the path of destruction blaming our circumstances. It was only after we had found peace in recovery that we saw it was a gift rather than a curse. We were given the gift of desperation.
Hitting a rock bottom (which can happen at any time) enabled us to make a decision. We either were going to go to the bitter end (death, or worst, kill someone else) or we were going to recover. We found we were out of options and every bridge we took we had burned. For those of you who are just hitting a rock bottom now, it may seem impossible, but you can recover too; it’s just going to take some work on your part. For those of you who have found peace in recovery, remembering where we came from can help when we lose gratitude for where we are at in life today.
Sometimes I forget how fortunate and blessed I am. I forget that I no longer have to fight the drink or drug; I am free of the obsession. All of the worries and fears that I had when I first came into the program, have all since been resolved. It has taken some time, but it eventually just worked itself out. All I had to do was work my program of recovery.
There were even rock bottoms that I met in recovery, and yet still, I did not have to pick up. Life is going to happen and it can be messy sometimes, but it can also be so very beautiful. Enjoy the beautiful moments when you have them, and work through the difficult ones with help. Whether you are in recovery a long time or just coming in (or back) and you are experiencing a rock bottom, I suggest you dive into your program of recovery and keep pushing through. It is only when our pride and ego are in the way that we suffer in silence – let it go and reach out. You are not alone!
How am I blocking myself from the happiness and freedom of the program? What am I willing to do different?
