“It’s always darkest before the dawn”- Proverb
Shine On Meditation
Have you ever met someone that when they share there is this twinkle in their eye and they just seem to shine? I remember when I first came into recovery I would see these people and wanted so badly what they had. Their skin was fresh, they were laughing, and they genuinely seemed happy and free. They didn’t need drugs or alcohol to make them feel OK and they were perfectly alright without it. They told me that I could shine too; I just had to do a little work towards my recovery.
If I wanted to shine and have that glow about me, I had to really live this way of life. I had to watch out for things like dishonesty, fear, resentment, and selfishness. These were the things that were blocking me from my sobriety. If I let these things get in the way of my recovery, then I would not be able to enjoy life and I would not be able to stay sober. There was more work to be done.
I don’t believe you can stay sober for any length of time without changing. We are always changing and it depends on our actions and attitude to which direction we will change towards. If I wanted to be free from the obsession to drink or use and be happy, I had to adapt to a new attitude and change my behaviors – It was that simple. If I do what I’ve always done, I’ll get what I’ve always gotten.
So whether you are new in recovery or an old-timer, it’s your time to shine on! If you are living a program of recovery and applying that program honestly to your life you can get that shine on at any time. Recovery is about living life a new and glorious way and it can start with anyone at anytime. There was a long time that I thought I could never live without filling my void with alcohol or drugs. Today I see that my void is overflowing with love, joy, happiness, and peace. I know I can’t keep this feeling if I don’t put in the work, so I usually just ask myself one simple question: Where am I blocking myself from shining brightly? Just for today, step aside and let yourself shine. The worlds need your smile.
