“Showing up is 80% of life.” – Woody Allen
Show Up In Recovery
Recovery is cool in the fact that we get to be present and show up today. At first we suited up, showed up, and for some of us, we finally shut up and listened. We learned that when we showed up to our meetings, showed up for our sponsor (later sponsees), showed up for work, school, and family, things started to turn around. We knew that we had to do more than just show up, but it was a start, and for an addict or alcoholic whose natural state is to be selfish and scared – this was huge.
It first started with me showing up to detox and going to treatment. Each morning I would walk up and show up to group (most times tired, angry, and scared), then I showed up to a halfway house and of course my meetings. It was hard in the beginning to show up for my family though; I was still not accountable and definitely selfish. After working the steps and helping others I began to see that I needed to show up for my family and friends too. I needed to be present in all my affairs and that meant in all my relationships. I saw that I needed balance and so I prayed for it.
Today I am able to show up in all areas of my life. I have found a beautiful balance between work, my recovery program, and all my relationships. I am also able to show up for me today by taking care of myself and my recovery. I do not however use that as excuse to not show up for my family, I did enough of that in my addiction.
Although showing up is important, so is the action I take. I don’t just like to show up today, I enjoy being in the moment and being present. If I am in the company of the family or friends and my behavior is less than desirable, then I haven’t really shown up in the way I need to. To the best of my ability, I must always remember to be present and be grateful when I show up in the lives of others. It’s important that I bring good energy to those I love, and not tarnish the time we have with my negativity and hate. Let’s remember not to steal the show always and forget why it’s important for us to show up in all affairs today.
