“Honor your commitments with integrity.” – Les Brown
Meditation on Integrity
All we have in this world is our word. What we do with our words says something about our character and integrity, and if we lie or go back on our word, we have damaged both. People will lose both trust and faith in us if we don’t have integrity and we suddenly realize that the company we keep is a direct result of what we have chosen to do with our words.
Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. As human beings we need to honor ourselves through our words and actions. Most of us came into recovery not being honest and never committing to anything. In fact, when asked to commit we usually would follow with words like “I’ll try”, and “maybe” giving ourselves an out if we needed it. People with integrity honor their words and their commitments, to themselves and others. If you cannot be honest in all your affairs and stay committed to your goals as well as your program, how will you be able to keep this beautiful gift of recovery and live a full life?
Many who come into recovery at first just want to get clean and sober but later realize that they want so much more for themselves and their lives. They want to be free from fear, and not just from booze or drugs, but the kind of freedom one can attain through living with integrity. Free from the fear of people, the material world, and their own negative beliefs. When we let our fears control our actions, we may forget to fully embrace life and we may get the feeling that we are missing out on something. What if you made a commitment to yourself, to others, and to your Higher Power, that just for today you were going to live by integrity? What would that look like to you?
Today take a bold and daring stance through your integrity and be honest in all your affairs, be a man/woman of your word and honor yourself and others with the action that follows that word. Today take the chance and live life free from having to be right, trying to impress others, being comfortably stuck, and never taking healthy risks. That same passion you had when you were willing to do whatever it took to get clean and sober should be that same passion as you follow your dreams in life. This is your day to take a stand and live life with integrity.
