Over Christmas break on December 29, a college student took the synthetic party drug mephedrone, also known as “meow meow.” The 19-year-old student ended up stabbing his own mother and cutting off his genitals while high. When local authorities rushed to the scene, after a call from the 46-year-old mother called police, they found the young man hanging out of his bedroom window with blood spewing from his self-made wounds. Both of them suffered life-threatening injuries and were rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment. It is believed that the student took mephedrone not long before he injured his mother and himself. They are said to both be stable condition, and the student has had his penis successfully sewn back on. This is a crazy situation and late Christmas present, but what exactly is mephedrone and why did it cause this reaction in him?
What is Mephedrone?
Mephedrone is a new synthetic party drug, much like an amphetamine stimulant which has a few other nicknames for itself: drone, meow meow, and MCAT. Mephedrone is one of many designer drugs or “legal highs” that have come to light in latest years, including non-natural chemicals such as K2 and spice. It was first formed in 1929, but didn’t become commonly recognized until it was rediscovered in 2003. By 2007, it became available to purchase on the internet and started retailing in different countries around the world.
The effects that mephedrone produces are similar to cocaine, while bringing its user the feeling of euphoria, but can also bring anxiety and paranoia with it. Other dangerous effects brought on by taking mephedrone are listed as increased heart rate, changes in body temperatures, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, and depression. Not to get mistaken for methadone or methamphetamine, this drug brings designer drugs to a whole new, lethal level. It has been linked to an unfortunate amount of unconfirmed fatalities in the UK, making the drug illegal to sell and acquire. Confiscations and deaths of this drug have already been noted in the USA, and it seems to be coming more common. This dangerous drug needs to be addressed and prevented.
