“You’ve gotta love yourself enough to look INSIDE you & not BESIDE you for your joy, confidence, & self worth.” ― Mandy Hale
Keep Calm & Treat Yourself Meditation
It is true that when we come into the rooms of recovery we are to be less selfish and think more of others, but that does not mean we don’t treat ourselves. Having self-care is very different than being selfish. If all we did was always think of others and not take care of ourselves and our affairs as well, we would see how our lives would easily become unmanageable again. Treating ourselves to a massage, haircut, or even a gift is not being selfish if it’s not done in excess, is very healthy. It is OK to treat yourself.
If we didn’t treat ourselves or even take care of ourselves, and we were always running around helping others and thinking of others, we may actually be acting out on defect of character and living life a little too co-decently. Balance is often something that most people in general struggle with, and even more so for the alcoholic/addict. Balance is crucial though, and if we don’t treat ourselves enough we may start to lose sight of our own health, physical appearance, mental health, and emotional well-being all together.
Sometimes when we treat ourselves or put our own needs before others, we may have a tendency of feeling guilty, but you shouldn’t. If you can honestly say to yourself and to your Higher Power that you do the best you can do on a daily, and help others the best you can, sometimes you need to treat yourself. We know when we need to stop and slow down, if you found that you are constantly going and have not had time to rest or sleep, treat yourself to a nap. You of no service to your fellows or even a newcomer if you are cranky, worn out, and don’t even look good yourself. Nobody wants to look like a mess, we have already been there.
Be sure to keep calm and treat yourself so that you can continue to live life happy clean and sober. As long as you have balance in your life, you will find peace in your heart. It’s only when we are trying to control and run the show that we find ourselves burning energy foolishly and not taking care of ourselves. It’s just as important to care of yourself as it is to care of others, just have balance. You will know in your heart when you are being too selfish, and if no, a good friend or sponsor and prayer will help guide you.
