Addressing stress symptoms can be tricky if you are not even aware that you are stressed out in the first place. It’s true that not all stress is bad, but when it’s causing problems both physically and mentally, it can be. For the addict or alcoholic trying to get clean and sober, stress can be a trigger for picking up drugs and alcohol if not addressed. Understanding stress symptoms can help alleviate some of the root causes and get you back on track to living stress-free and in recovery.
Quick to be irritated or angry and don’t really know why? Anger and irritability that come from nowhere are usually signs of stress.
One minute you’re happy, the next you’re sad, and you can’t seem to figure out what could be causing this. It may actually be your stress level.
Feeling Overwhelmed/ Lack Of Time
People who do not have balance in their life will constantly have the sense of being overwhelmed. Life can busy, but if you are taking on too much and do not have time to relax, this stress will not go away on its own.
Anxiety and constant worrying about people, places, and things for the majority of the day is unhealthy and unproductive. It will not only affect your day, but eventually your relationships and life.
When your thinking is becoming more pessimistic than optimistic, and you see little joy in everyday living, you may be suffering from depression as a result of stressing out.
Feeling tired throughout the day and and overall lack of sleep because you can’t seem to decompress from the day will add to your stress levels.
Every single cold or flu bug that comes around you seem to get. Not only do you get them, but you just can’t seem to recover from them like you used to. You’re starting to feel like you are constantly run down.
Lack of Concentration/Memory Loss
You are finding it more difficult to concentrate, and your short term memory seems to be more affected. You may even forget what you were trying to do when you start to work on something.
Getting Rid Of Stress Symptoms
When looking at the symptoms of stress one can quickly see how easy it is to slip into unhealthy living habits. If stress goes untreated, it could have the deadly potential of causing an addict or alcoholic to relapse or fall ill. Stress also has been linked to cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. The health risks of stress are pretty obvious to most, but symptoms of stress usually go unnoticed until it causes enough problems to be addressed. Untreated stress can also damage relationships, careers, and even one’s personal quality of life. In the end, it seems high levels of stress are just not worth all the trouble.
Having balance in life is key when it comes to dealing with stress symptoms. Working a program of recovery, eating healthy, drinking lots of water, getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep, balancing time between work and play, exercising, and practicing mediation can greatly reduce your stress levels.
