“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” – Helen Keller
If you cannot let go of the past you will never see what beauty awaits you, it’s that simple. So many of us hold on to our set ideas, plagued thoughts, resentments, and fears that we don’t believe it will get better. We cling to bad people, bad dwellings, and bad things that bind us to a life unfulfilled and ultimately twist our character. We talk about our intentions but neglect to put it into action. We talk about our resolutions, but never make a decision. These are the things that hold us back from moving on.
Just because we get clean and sober, doesn’t mean that life is going to be full of butterflies and rainbows, it simply means we can participate now. Some of us come into recovery wanting to hang on to old ideas, beliefs, or even a things and we feel stuck. We think we can continue in recovery gripping tightly and we will be happy. The truth is if we can’t move on, we can’t grow. If we can’t grow, we may not be able to stay clean and sober, or even really happy.
Life is about change and it’s always going to change, with or without our consent. When we flow with a plan that is greater than ourselves, life seems to be a little easier. When we do things our way or we allow our feelings to control our actions, we find that we struggle greatly. Life happens, it’s messy and dirty sometimes, what we do with it is how we own life. Am I willing to let go of those ideas and beliefs so I can move on to greater happiness? Or am I willing to let it become my character today?
