Lil Wayne spent six days in ICU last week after suffering from several seizures and reportedly being placed in a coma. On March 15th, he tweeted from his handle, @LilTunechi, “I’m good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love.” Lil Wayne also posted the same message on his facebook page as over 700 fans commented with responses of, “im so proud of wayne,” “If this is what comes out when ur not sippin drank. Please continue to sip drank,” and “get well soon.” If substance abuse and drugs are behind Lil Wayne’s medical issues, it’s amazing how most of his fans responded with “hope you feel better” rather than a “you should stop doing drugs”. As a society, are we really helping celebrity addicts and alcoholics by saying nothing? I am sure the family members of Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, and Mindy McCready would have something different to say about that.
Lil Wayne’s Seizures
Enabling A Celebrity Addict
To be clear, just because a person has a seizure, it does not automatically constitute a substance abuse problem or drug addiction. In this case, however, it wouldn’t be outrageous to suggest that maybe Lil Wayne’s seizures were the effect of abusing powerful prescription drugs like Codeine. If a person wasn’t born with seizures or diagnosed with a condition that causes seizures, more times than not, it’s the result of a mixture of alcohol and drugs. It is still unclear if Lil Wayne seizure was as a result of drugs or not.
Lil Wayne’s Seizures Drug Related?
MGK, Machine Gun Kelly, who recently gained popularity in the rap scene because of his sick rhymes and message against bullies, is also an addict. “I used to stand out because I was tall and I couldn’t really fight back then,” says MGK. “Then I got tired of getting beat up so I started fighting people with my words instead.” Fans look up to MGK because of his message against bullies; they get strength from his message. In other words, he gives hope and a sense of knowing they are not alone. The sad side of his story is his drug addiction problem. MGK has been trying to get clean and sober for some time now, but keeps relapsing. Fans keep thanking him for his music because it has helped them heal from bullying, but none of them are really seeing that his biggest bully are the drugs he is addicted to. Such a talented young man has already affected the lives of thousands by sharing his experience, strength, and hope but cannot take a sober breath long enough to enjoy it.
Drugs Help Me Be Creative, They Take Away The Pain
Most addicts and alcoholics use and drink because they like the effect it produces; even if they know it’s causing them harm. Many creative types, like Lil Wayne and MGK, will use these substances to help keep up with their creativity or cope with the pain of the past. Either way, the message these celebrities are giving their fans: “If you want what I have, you’ll do what I do.” We can’t blame these celebrities and musicians entirely either; aren’t we all just enablers ourselves by saying nothing and buying their merchandise, going to their concerts, and worshiping the very ground they walk on? Knowing full well that they are suffering drug addiction and substance abuse?
We may not have control over what musicians and celebrities do with their bodies, but we do have control over our own actions. What are we willing to do as a society to help our fellow brother and sisters who are suffering from addictions like Lil Wayne or MGK? Everyone should have the opportunity to recover from addiction, even if they are stars.Tags: celebrities addicts, codeine, coma, drug abuse, lil wayne, MGK, Oxycodone, Recovery Concert, seizure, Watershed Ashling
