Move over bath salts. The designer drug scene has become even more crowded with the introduction of a little known synthetic hallucinogen named “smiles” or the more sterile sounding “2C-1.” This latest designer drug has been recently linked to the news that using, Johnny Lewis dead at a young age. Lewis was an actor on the FX show Sons of Anarchy. More on that below. As we have documented before, newer synthetic drugs like K-2, Spice, and even Bath Salts have been proliferating the market and selling at high rates due to the drugs’ legality. However 2C-1 is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance because of its hallucinogenic affects.
Not Your Parent’s High: Johnny Lewis Dead
Like common illegal hallucinogens like LSD or psilocybin-stuffed mushrooms, smiles induces the user with non-fatal sensory experiences. But unlike its inveterate counterparts, smiles also exhibits amphetamine-like symptoms that kick the users’ central nervous system into overdrive. This is a bad thing. Like bath salts, smiles is produced in labs that don’t really adhere to any drug/chemical guidelines, only Adam Smith’s. (18th century economist, proponent of free-markets) In other words, sell, sell, sell. So like the wonderful results of the zombie-inducing bath salt market, smiles has the potential to do horrific damage to the user and to others.
Like any other substance that has the potential to be abused to a scale of self-destruction that spills over into other people’s lives as well, a smiles user is probably using and/or abusing another substance. Asking the question “Am I addicted?” is a helpful way to address and hopefully arrest problems before they lead to horrible scenarios. Another problem is the accessibility of this and other designer drugs-nouveau.
Johnny Lewis Isn’t Smiling Anymore
The news that police found Johnny Lewis dead just broke yesterday. Lewis apparently found smiles to be easily procured as he allegedly was enjoying the buzz before mauling and horrifically beating an 81 year old woman to death, then dismembering her cat, then attacking three other men, then falling to his DEATH from the lady’s roof. He was 28. He had once dated Katy Perry. Sons of Anarchy creator called Lewis’ death “a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not, I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path. Yes, it’s day of mourning, but it’s also a day of awareness and gratitude. Sadly, some of us carry the message by dying.”
Smiles will not be the last drug to be synthesized from disparate chemical like bath salts. In fact, they may continue to increase in the destructive nature that is displayed by the user.
