Alcoholism Defined

People who are addicted to alcohol are known as alcoholics; the name associated with alcohol addiction is known as alcoholism. Addiction to alcohol is defined by the psychological and physical dependency that drives a person to consume alcohol despite any negative consequences. Even if an addict wanted to stop drinking, the withdrawal symptoms and mental hardships often cause them to relapse.

Signs of Alcohol Addiction

You may have developed an addiction to alcohol if you notice that one or more of the following are prevalent in, or due to your drinking habits:

  • You need to drink more to reach the desired level of intoxication due to an increased tolerance.
  • You keep drinking despite the negative consequences that can manifest in your health, family life, and career.
  • You are unable to quit even if you desire to because of the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms such as, shakes, sweats, and mood swings.
  • You choose to drink to cope with stressful situations or emotions.
  • You spend a lot of time thinking about or planning on how you can get more alcohol.
  • You remove yourself from activities that you would normally take part in so that you can drink more.

Alcoholism Versus Alcohol Abuse

While most consider them one and the same, in truth, they are very different yet equally dangerous conditions that are exceedingly difficult to rehabilitate from. According to the American Medical Association, alcoholism is a disease. Someone that is addicted to alcohol will continue to drink compulsively regardless of any negative consequences. Their entire world revolves around obtaining and consuming alcohol. On the other hand, alcohol abuse is anytime that a person consumes enough alcohol to become intoxicated to the point of severe inebriation. This may include, but is not limited to “blackout” episodes where the individual cannot remember what happened during the time of intoxication, or, alcohol poisoning.

Alcoholism and Genetics

Alcoholism is an addiction that research has shown can be passed genetically. However, that does not mean that all individuals that have alcoholic parents are doomed to alcohol dependency. The environment that someone grows up in plays a role in how likely it is that a person will develop a dependency on alcohol. For instance, if you grow up in a home with alcoholic parents that make drinking seem normal and engage in other dysfunctional behaviors, then there is a greater chance you may suffer from alcoholism. The important thing is to understand if you are at risk so that you can take steps to prevent alcohol addiction.

Finding Treatment for Alcoholism

The treatment that you choose to undergo will depend on your personal level of dependency on alcohol. In most cases, patients will need to complete a medically supervised alcohol detoxification followed by an intensive rehabilitation program.

Everyone that is looking to enroll in an alcohol detox program should find out if it has the following important components:

  • An inpatient alcohol detox program.
  • An alcohol detox program that provides 24-hour supervision by professional medical staff.
  • ASAM certified and trained physicians in addiction medicine
  • Extensive and informative family outreach program.
  • A thorough relapse prevention counseling program.
  • Dual diagnosis treatment program for those with co-occurring conditions.
  • A facility that is licensed by the state and accredited through the Joint Commission.
